Sam Hughes, located in central Tucson, is one of the oldest neighborhoods. It is just east of the University of Arizona and about two and a half miles from downtown Tucson. It is bordered on the north by Speedway Blvd., on the south by Broadway Blvd., on the west by Campbell Ave., and on the east by Country Club Rd.
This is one of those “magical” neighborhoods one finds in some cities that blends a mix of architectural styles, a diverse population of students, professionals and families, seniors, small shops & businesses into an eclectic blend that is greater than the sum of its parts. The neighborhood is bigger than the individuals who inhabit it.
The neighborhood is named after Sam Hughes. He was a successful business man in California before contracting tuberculosis which prompted his move to the tiny village of Tucson in 1859. He left Tucson in the early 1860′s after refusing to live under the Confederate flag, only to return in 1862 with a battery of Union soldiers. In the 1870′s he not only helped incorporate the city of Tucson, but he was also instrumental in establishing public education in the area.
One main attraction to the Sam Hughes neighborhood is Himmel Park, named after Tucsonan Alvina Himmel Edmondson’s parents. The land was part of her family’s original homestead in 1897.
The charm of Sam Hughes is in its homes. Most are bungalow type homes, built in the early 20s and 30s. The neighborhood is very popular with families, students and employees of the University of Arizona.
The neighborhood has a robust association which hosts monthly meetings, an annual home tour and other events throughout the year.
Within the neighborhood, you’ll find restaurants, coffee shops, markets and bike friendly roads. And, for the college sports fan, the University of Arizona’s campus is a couple blocks away.
