West University

West University is directly west of the University. This is a historic neighborhood with beautiful homes designed by famous architects like Henry Trost.

West University got its start just as the University was being established.  Professors and University staff began building their homes in this area between 1890 and 1930. 6th Avenue was home to the Rondstadt family (singer Linda’s family) and the historic Big Blue House.

To the northeast is Main Gate Square which leads into the University.  Main Gate Square is run by The Marshall Foundation. It was built in the early 1920′s by the University’s first female professor, Louise Marshall. From the Main Gate Square website:

Today, the nonprofit Marshall Foundation, established in 1930 by Mrs. Marshall, owns and manages most of the two block area between Park and Euclid on University. Since that time, the Marshall Foundation has contributed over $11 million to more than 200 local charities and organizations, and to the University of Arizona for scholarships and special needs.

Home styles in West University are typically craftsman bungalow, ranch, territorial craftsman and rock/brick/adobe styles.  Many have been updated and restored, some are still in need of some tender loving care.
